Defence Pacific Engagement

Maritime Capability

Defence is delivering maritime capability through the Pacific Maritime Security Program. The Australian Government is also considering options for a dedicated vessel to support increased engagement with our partners in the Pacific.

The Pacific Maritime Security Program will bolster the maritime security of Pacific Island nations, helping to protect their maritime environment, resources and sovereignty. It will deliver 19 purpose-built Guardian-class patrol boats to 12 Pacific Island nations and two to Timor-Lesté between 2018–23 and is supported by a regional aerial surveillance capability.

Members of the Gizo crew march onto the wharf in preparation of the Solomon Island national flag is raised for the first time at the handover of the fifth Guardian-class Patrol Boat, Gizo, at Austal Shipyards in Henderson, Western Australia.
