When you serve with the ADF you will be paid a salary if you are a:
The ADF sets your salary and allowances through the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal. The tribunal determines your salary and allowances through the Workplace Remuneration Agreement. It also approves any increases in your salary and/or allowances.
The Defence Force Advocate stands in for your interests on the Tribunal.
You get an annual salary and service allowance. You pay income tax on your salary.
Your rate of pay depends on your rank, pay increment levels and pay grade. When your employment category changes, your pay grade may also change.
Your pay grade may also reflect any flying, submarine, special forces and special operations experience that you use in your job.
If you're a trainee or above the rank of Major, you will not get service allowance.
As a member of the Reserves on continuous full-time service, you will get a salary and a Service allowance.
As a member of the Reserves on Reserve service you:
Your standard working day is the same as Permanent Forces members working at the same location.
If you work more days than approved, you may not get a salary for your excess service.
You will get a salary and trainee allowance during:
Your trainee salary may be less than your existing pay if you are already in the ADF.
When you finish your training you will move to the salary level for your new employment category.
You pay income tax on your salary.
You usually get the minimum salary for your rank at the relevant pay grade.
You may get more based on your:
If you're doing recategorisation training, you may get the same salary and service or reserve allowance as you got before you started training.
You'll be paid every fortnight. Your salary is based on a 7-day week.
You may not get a salary if you are:
As a member of the Permanent Forces, you may get a pay increase when you complete 12 months continuous full-time service or more at your current level. This includes a member on part-time leave without pay.
Most ranks in the ADF have several pay increment levels. These are based on:
As your competency increases you may move up to the top of your rank and pay grade.
If you perform higher duties, this may count towards a pay increment at your substantive rank.
If you do not carry out your duties at the standard required, your pay increment may be deferred.
If you are a legal officer, medical officer or other specialist, you will have a separate pay increment and competency arrangement.
As a member of the Reserves, you must complete 20 or more days Reserve service in a 12 month period to move from one salary increment point to the next.
Your pay increase depends on how many days of duty you complete. This includes part days.
If your rank is reduced, you may get a salary at the lower rank.
If you're on part-time leave without pay, your salary will be lower.
