Expenses when a posting is cancelled

If your posting is cancelled before you start duty in a new location, you may get reimbursed what you spent getting ready for your posting.

When can I get expenses reimbursed?

You may receive a posting authority which is cancelled before you begin duty in the new posting.

The cancellation wasn’t caused by your personal circumstances.

You spent money as a result of your posting authority and can’t get a refund from a third party. You can’t use those goods and services on your next posting.

How much can I get reimbursed?

Some or all of your costs may have been covered if you had taken up the posting.

You can’t get reimbursed more than the allowance you would have otherwise received.

You may get reimbursed for:

  • Disturbance allowance
  • Loss on sale of a vehicle
  • Housing allowance
  • Education assistance
  • Loss of a child’s scholarship
  • Equipment costs, and/or
  • Transfer allowance.

What should my decision-maker consider?

Your decision-maker should consider:

  • what the money was spent on
  • how the money was spent
  • how you continue to benefit from what you bought, and
  • any other relevant factors.

More information about expenses when a posting is cancelled can be found in Chapter 6 Part 6.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document. Therefore, if there is any conflict between the Member's Guide and Defence Determination 2016/19, Conditions of Service (and the Determinations made by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal), as compiled in PACMAN, PACMAN is the authority.

This Member's Guide does not incorporate or make provision for members on a flexible service determination.
