Compassionate leave

Compassionate leave gives you time off if a close relative dies or suffers an illness or injury that could endanger their life.

Who can get compassionate leave?

You may get compassionate leave if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

When can I get compassionate leave?

You may get compassionate leave if a close relative:

  • dies
  • is seriously ill, or
  • is very seriously ill.

Who is a close relative?

Your close relative could be:

  • your parent, brother, sister, child, dependant, spouse or partner
  • the parent or child of your spouse or partner
  • if your spouse or partner is also a member, a dependant of your spouse or partner, or
  • any other person approved as your close relative or a close relative of your spouse or partner.

How much compassionate leave can I get?

You may get up to five days of compassionate leave in a year. The days do not have to be taken all at once.

You may get additional days depending on your circumstances.
