ADF Member's Guide

Personal purchase of uniform articles

You may get a refund if you choose to buy approved uniform articles privately, instead of getting them through free issue.

Who can get a refund for the purchase of approved uniform articles?

You may get a refund if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service, or
  • Reserves on Reserve service

and you are:

  • an officer on appointment, or
  • a Warrant Officer on enlistment or promotion.

When can I get a refund for the purchase of approved uniform articles?

You may buy approved uniform articles instead of getting them through free issue. You may get a refund for the cost of these uniform articles if:

  • you are eligible to get the articles at Defence expense, and
  • the purchase is reasonable.

What should the decision-maker consider?

When you decide if the purchase is reasonable, you should consider:

  • if the item is available from your Service
  • where the member is posted
  • the member’s duties, and
  • if the member needs the item because of a medical condition.

Your refund will be no higher than the price listed on the Defence Clothing Store website.

More information about this allowance can be found in Chapter 10 Part 2.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document. Therefore, if there is any conflict between the Member's Guide and Defence Determination 2016/19, Conditions of Service (and the Determinations made by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal), as compiled in PACMAN, PACMAN is the authority.

This Member's Guide does not incorporate or make provision for members on a flexible service determination.
