Jonathan Appleby - Hobart

A former St Virgil’s High School student who followed his brother and sister into the ADF has just returned from a four month deployment to Solomon Islands.

Jonathan Appleby is a lieutenant in the Army Reserve and it’s his job to lead and command a platoon of 30 diggers.

He said he joined the Army Reserve because he saw how his brother and sister had benefited from a life in the Army.

“My sister Julie is currently serving in the Middle East and my brother Jerry is now a reservist after serving seven years in the Regular Army,” he said.

Lieutenant Appleby deployed in April with Operation Anode, the ADF contribution to the peacekeeping and stabilisation mission to Solomon Islands.

He said the highlight of his deployment was having the opportunity to lead diggers on operations and develop his leadership style.

“Leading Australian soldiers is a privilege,” he said.

“I enjoy being able to see the soldiers’ skills grow and develop while they are under my command.
“I also enjoyed working alongside partner nations such as Tonga and New Zealand, and seeing how the Army can contribute to the stability of a nation.”

Lieutenant Appleby now plans to resume his university studies in International Relations and International Marketing after spending some time with his family.
