Luke Gulliver - Murrumba Downs

After 21 years in the Australian Army, Brisbane’s (Murrumba Downs) Luke Gulliver is finally living his dream of serving his country overseas.

The 41 year old corporal is currently deployed to Royal Malaysian Air Force Base Butterworth as a chef supervisor with Rifle Company Butterworth 113 rotation in Malaysia.

"I always wanted to do 20 years," Corporal Luke Gulliver said.

"Now to actually have a deployment and have been somewhere to serve my country, it's a good honour."

His 90 day deployment made even more special, after commemorating Anzac Day in Penang.

"Having Anzac day over here meant the world to me," he said.

"Family at home are really proud of what I do and the fact they can go, 'yeah he's actually overseas now on that day', is good."

Corporal Gulliver's deployment also coincided with Exercise Bersama Shield 16, an annual multilateral training exercise between the Five Power Defence Arrangements nations – Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

He said he enjoys working with people from different nationalities and different military backgrounds.

"Just to be part of that type of environment situation is good," he said.

"The guys that I'm with are my family while I'm over here.

"I give them what I can and do what I can for them."

Back in Brisbane, Corporal Gulliver works for 10 Force Support Battalion at Enoggera Barracks and has no plans to slow down.

"I'm going for 25 (years) and, depending on the body, I'll try to hit 30," he said.
