Natalie Carey - Sydney

Wanting a challenge in life has seen Natalie Carey from Sydney take on the ultimate role she could think of, and that was to join the Royal Australian Navy.

Married to a career sailor and turning 38, Natalie said she wanted to push herself out of her comfort zone.

"You never know what you are capable of until you push yourself to the next level," Natalie said.

"I wanted to prove to my 17 year old daughter, that no matter how old you are, you can always do something meaningful in life," she said.

Inevitably with Natalie's background in office administration, she enlisted in Maritime Logistics Personnel Operations. She graduated in 2014.

Posting to HMAS Creswell, the Jervis Bay resident is on her first major Operational deployment to the Middle East region on OP ACCORDION.

Able Seaman Carey said she was honoured and grateful to be given the opportunity to deploy.

Her husband, Petty Officer Julian Carey an aircraft technician is currently posted to HMAS Albatross.

He had just returned from his OP MANITOU deployment on HMAS Melbourne, when Able Seaman Carey was packing her bags – she'll be away from home for the next six months.

Settling into her position at headquarters Joint Task Force 633 orderly room, Able Seaman Carey is the first point of contact for any deployed personnel seeking administrative assistance.

"My team here is tri-service, however primarily navy, we look after the day to day operations of headquarters administration," Able Seaman Carey said.

"This includes coordinating honours and awards and the patching in of new members.

It's a great team environment and I love being here," she said.
