Lieutenant Simon Gillespie

Born in Canberra, Lieutenant Simon Gillespie commenced rowing in high school at St Ignatius College Riverview and continued rowing for St John’s College whilst studying at Sydney University. Simon transitioned to Surf Boat Rowing at Queenscliff Surf Club where he was a part of the U23 Australian Championship Crew of 2014.

Lieutenant Gillespie has twice contested, and once won, the Disher Cup while at the Royal Military College – Duntroon. Clive Disher, stroke of the 1919 winning crew,  presented the Cup to the Royal Military College-Duntroon in memory of the King’s Cup final which was raced between Australia and Oxford University. The Disher Cup is raced annually between the Royal Military College-Duntroon, the Australian National University and the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Lieutenant Gillespie commissioned into the Australian Army in 2017, and is posted to Townsville as an Infantry Platoon Commander of the third Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, a position he has held since 2018.
