Australian Government Security Vetting

Page last reviewed: 21 Mar 2017

Who we are

Launched in 2010, the AGSVA is a centralised government agency providing vetting services on behalf of the majority of Australian Government agencies and state and territory agencies.

Based within and run by the Department of Defence, the AGSVA helps cut red tape and streamline vetting services by providing a single security clearance recognised across government–a Commonwealth Security Clearance.

What we do

The AGSVA undertakes the full spectrum of vetting services. We:

  • assess applications for security clearances
  • grant and upgrade clearances
  • manage reports of changes in circumstances, and
  • review existing clearances to assess a clearance subject's ongoing need and suitability to hold a security clearance.

Why are security clearances necessary

Misuse or mishandling of classified information or resources, whether deliberate or accidental, can have serious consequences for the Australian Government.

For this reason the government needs to be sure that people who have access to classified information and resources can be relied on to respect and protect classified information and resources appropriately.

The security clearance process is one of the mechanisms used to ensure classified information and resources are only entrusted to suitable people who demonstrate a proper appreciation of their security responsibilities and obligations.
