Can I organise a placement for my child directly with a Defence establishment?

Work experience placements, other than those offered on the Defence Work Experience Website, may be arranged through direct contact with the Defence establishment. In these cases, Defence does not guarantee a placement. Parents are requested to organise these placements through their child's school.

Where an individual placement is arranged, it will need to comply with the Work Experience Program requirements and the relevant Work Experience Application and Agreement forms will need to be completed.

How does the Defence Work Experience Program differ from other work experience programs?

There is no difference. Defence is committed to providing a structured work experience placement that provides the opportunity to experience one of the wide variety of careers available in Defence. These placements offer benefits to both the student and Defence.

Will my child be covered by Insurance?

All schools and other educational institutions are required to have:

  1. insurance cover for work experience students against injury whilst on work experience;
  2. indemnity for Defence in the event of a claim against Defence resulting from an injury or death of a student or from damage to property or injury or death of members of the public caused by a work experience student; and
  3. compensation for damage to property (Defence and third party) caused by a work experience student.

Defence will not accept the placement if your child's school, or other educational institution, does not provide evidence of adequate insurance coverage for their students undertaking work experience.

What happens if my child is injured when on work experience?

Defence conforms to State based legislation relating to Work Health and Safety in relation to work experience when designing work placement activities. A safety risk assessment is undertaken for all work experience placements.

Schools and other educational institutions should undertake their own risk assessment for their students.

In the event that a student is injured or becomes ill during a work experience placement, Defence will arrange immediate medical attention and the student's nominated emergency contact will be notified. In the case of minors, the student's school or other educational institution will also be advised.
