RMC Duntroon Visit

Hi, my name is Kyle Monaghan and I attend the RMC Duntroon work experience program in November 2011. This was an absolutely fantastic experience. I had the best time, meeting new people and having new experiences.

I have lived in Narromine all my life, my parents moved here in 1988 when they married, they were from further west (though not to far) Nyngan. So our whole lives have been in the remote area, however we have always lived in town. I am the oldest of 4 children, I have 1 brother, 2 sisters.

My interest was in police/forensics/toxicologist during year 10 and 11 of school, when some friends were doing Army Cadets so I started as well. I enjoyed this so much I decided I would like to join the Army as a carpenter / weapons engineer. I was lucky enough to gain a scholarship for year 12 from the Australian Defence Force Trade Careers, which helped me and my family in my last year of school.

In mid November a friend ‘s parent email some information about NSW ICPA work experience with Duntroon, as they knew I was interested in joining the Army. I followed this up with my careers adviser. With a lot of work on both my career adviser’s part and my mum’s, I was lucky enough to gain a position in this program.

The week wasn’t long enough; I enjoyed it so much, meeting great people who I have kept in contact with. Learning new skills and learning about the Defence Force and having so much more respect for the personnel.

Going into Duntroon for the week, I was a bit nervous about what to expect, I really had no idea, even though I did Army Cadets. Some of the actives we did were;

My favourite activity was the obstacle course in the dark as it tested my other senses besides sight.

Before the work experience I thought the Defence Force was good but now after I’ve done the work experience I feel this is where my career lies.

I am aiming to become an Infantry Officer, I have started applying and hopefully will make it through the interviews to become an Officer at RMC of Duntroon.

I would recommend this work experience to any student, even if they only have a small interest in the Australian Defence Force.
