Music with a Note of Fitness

Mikaela Mepham has just completed a week of work experience with the Australian Army Band at the Victoria Barracks in Paddington, Sydney. She had a fantastic week experiencing many different areas of life as an Army Musician.

On Monday she attended a ceremony where all the Defence Forces were represented as well as the Governor General Quentin Bryce. Tuesday was based around fitness and rehearsals and Wednesday a workshop and performance was held at Seaforth Public School. Mikaela played with the various bands (Concert Band, Stageband and Rock Band) and was even put on the spot to provide a solo in one of the pieces. This was an awesome experience to play with a group of professional musicians and to play such a wide range of pieces.

Thursday morning the Work Experience Co-Ordinator, Corporal Mark Jones decided it was time for the Army fitness test. This consisted of 70 sit-ups, 21 push-ups and a 2.4km run, to be completed in less than 13 minutes 30 seconds. Mikaela passed all components and completed the run in 10 minutes 30 seconds.

Thursday afternoon Mikaela accompanied the sax quartet to the Australian Golf Club where she enjoyed listening to them play and enjoyed a lovely lunch. Friday was a friendly game of soccer followed by more rehearsals.

A farewell presentation was held where Mikaela was presented with a certificate and some farewell gifts. Mikaela had an amazing week and made many new friends. She has been invited to return next year.
