A future Librarian - Defence library Services
By Joanne Heenan and Kimberly Asprey
Charles Sturt University student Kimberley Asprey recently participated in a one week work experience placement with the Defence Library Service NQ, at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville. Kimberley is studying a Bachelor of Information Studies (Library Services) and was interested in attending this placement to gain additional knowledge of organisation libraries. She was supervised by Library Manager Gail Bielenberg, who welcomed the opportunity to show Kimberley how the library caters to the needs of Defence personnel. Kimberley provided the following comments about her work experience placement at the library.
"The work experience placement with the DLS allowed me to explore the role that libraries play within the Defence Force. As a future librarian this was advantageous to me as it gave me a deeper understanding of the various sectors which offer career prospects. My knowledge of the practicalities and nature of the DLS collection and services has developed over this visit. During my placement I was able to see research being conducted, books processed and gained an overview of DLS policies and procedures. In conjunction with my studies, this placement has allowed me to gain an appreciation of library services that are available to defence personnel as well as how research is undertaken in the defence environment. The staff involved in my placement were helpful, friendly and generous in their time and advice regarding my future career opportunities, both within the DLS and in other library systems. As I have nearly completed my degree, this was an invaluable opportunity for me to discuss this. For those studying at University or TAFE, the placement is an excellent way to explore career opportunities offered by the APS."
