Defence Explosive Ordnance Training School - What we learnt and saw

Monday

Defence Establishment Orchard Hills base tour.

During this time we went to the surface launch missile facility. We were shown the encapsulated sea sparrow missile, harpoon and the standard missile 2. The rest of the day was spent around the Training School.

Tuesday

We travelled to RAAF Base Richmond with SGT Caetan.

At Richmond we went to 37 Squadron and went for a ground run on a C130 J Hercules. After 37 Squadron we visited the fire section. Whilst at the fire station we got to ride in the panther fire trucks.

After the fire section we went to the air traffic control tower, whilst there they showed us how the tower operated.

After the tower visit we went to the military dog section, here they displayed various dog commands.

Wednesday

We spent the day with the staff from Engineering and Logistics.

First we visited the range at Defence Establishment Orchard Hills for a pyro and demolition display. During the pyro display we used comet flares, smoke grenades and day night flares. After the pyro display, we detonated 1 detonator on the ground, 1 detonator in a tin and 6 metres of detonator cord.

After lunch we went with SGT Poole and tried on the bomb suit. Whilst in the bomb suit some of us did push ups and walked in the dark with the blast shield fitted. We went onto hanger 57 and got to sit in the Macchi aircraft and had a look at different bombs.

Thursday

All of Thursday we visited 1 Airfield Operations Support Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight. At the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight we used the minelab metal detector, x-ray equipment, chemical suit and the talon robot. Whilst at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight, we were taken to the armoury where we handled the F-88 Steyr, F-89 Minimi, Remington 870 shotgun and the Browning 9mm pistol
