    White Ribbon Day

    Defence’s ongoing commitment to cultural change was honoured in a landmark event in Canberra as the world prepares to mark White Ribbon Day on 25 November, 2016.

    The co-founder of the White Ribbon global movement, Dr Michael Kaufman, was welcomed to Canberra and given the opportunity to see for himself how Defence is working to transform attitudes, change behaviours and eliminate violence against women.

    Speaking to a Defence audience at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), Dr Kaufman said the ADF was creating history as the first defence force in the world to go through such a systematic program to address issues around violence, responses to violence, and how to create healthier workplace gender relations

    Also in attendance was the CEO of White Ribbon Australia, Libby Davies who said the ADF was to proving to be a leader in driving cultural change.

    The event marked one year since the Australian Army, Air Mobility Group and ADFA officially received White Ribbon workplace accreditation, joining the Royal Australian Navy and other areas of the Defence organisation previously accredited and recognised for their efforts in driving cultural change.

    Remembrance Day 2016

    On Remembrance Day staff from VCDF Group were among those who paused to honour all who have served Australia in war, on peacekeeping missions, and during humanitarian operations.

    Every year on the 11th of November people across Australia and around the world mark the end of the First World War and pay tribute to the service women and men who have served ever since.

    This year the VCDF was honoured to read the Eulogy for the Unknown Soldier at the evening’s Remembrance Day Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

    Mental Health Walk

    Staff from across VCDF Group were among those who participated in the Mental Health Walk on Friday 7 October.

    The walk brought the Defence community together to raise awareness of mental health issues. It is one of a number of events planned to coincide with ADF Mental Health Day, which encourages all of us to recognise the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing.

    Western Front

    Australian Defence Force personnel commemorated the centenary of the First World War Battle of Fromelles on the Western Front on 19 Jul 2016, with services at Pheasant Wood and VC Corner cemeteries to honour the service and sacrifice of those Australians who fought.

    A service was also held at Pozieres on 23 Jul 2016 to honour those fallen during the Battle of Pozieres.

    The battles are particularly significant in Australia's military history: Fromelles (19 Jul 1916) was the first major offensive by the Australians in France; and Pozieres (23 Jul to 3 Sep 1916) saw Australia sustain 23,000 casualties over seven weeks.

    French National Day Parade

    Australian Defence Force personnel have joined thousands of French military personnel marching down the famous Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris on Thursday, 14 July 2016 to mark French National Day celebrations in France.

    ADF personnel took the position of honour at the head of the parade, which is Europes oldest and largest regular military parade, before travelling to the Western Front in northern France for Centenary of Anzac commemorations of the battles of Fromelles and Pozieres later in July.

    French National Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 and the Fete de la Federation, which celebrates the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790.

    NAIDOC Week

    Staff from across VCDF Group were among those who attended a special ceremony in Canberra during NAIDOC Week to honour the contribution that Indigenous Australians have made to Defence over the years.

    Each July during NAIDOC Week events are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's NAIDOC Week celebrations focus on the theme 'Songlines: the living narrative of our nation'.

    Operation Reunite

    Two Royal Australian Air Force C-17A Globemaster aircraft lifted off from Subang airport in Malaysia on
    31 May 2016 bringing home the remains of 33 Australians from cemeteries in Malaysia and Singapore.

    Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs was among those who flew to Malaysia to pay their respects, with Australian Army soldiers from Lavarack Barracks in Townsville escorting the Australians on their journey home.

    The repatriation is one of the largest single repatriations of Australian servicemen and dependents in our history and was organised by the Office of Australian War Graves.

    Netherlands Australia Memorial

    The VCDF was among those who attended a special commemorative service on the 4th of May at the Netherlands East Indies Monument in Canberra.

    Every year on the 4th of May the people of the Netherlands pause to mark Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking). It serves as a day of reflection to honour the civilian and military victims of the Second World War and all others who have died in wars and peacekeeping missions ever since. In the Netherlands the national commemoration officially takes place at 8pm with two minutes of silence observed throughout the country.

    The following day, the 5th of May, festivities begin in honour of Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) as the country celebrates the end of the 1940-1945 German occupation.

    Anzac Day 2016 Activities

    The VCDF was among the thousands who attended Anzac Day commemorations this year in Canberra as people across the world paused to remember those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Commemorations were held throughout the day at the Australian War Memorial including the Dawn Service, the Indigenous Commemorative Service and the National Ceremony.

    100 Stories of Anzac

    The Vice Chief of the Defence Force (VCDF) is just one of the many Australian Defence Force members who have taken the time to reflect and record what the Centenary of Anzac means to them.

    Since early 2015, 100 messages reflecting 100 years of Anzac have been published on the Defence Video Portal to highlight the significance of the Anzac Centenary to current serving members of the ADF.
