The Military Personnel Administration Centre - Defence Support (MPAC-DS) is a Defence Support Group (DSG) personnel support services delivery organisation. It has the responsibility for the processing of ADF pay and leave for many ADF members. It is a “behind the scene” administrative function and you will generally not have any direct contact with MPAC-DS.
You will generally be administered by MPAC-DS if you are in a non-deployable Unit; you submit your forms through a Customer Service Centre; our you are posted to Defence Support Group. In addition, all Navy leave is processed at the MPAC-DS.
If you are in a Unit that is supported by its own Orderly Room, then you will generally be supported by that Orderly Room for most administrative functions.
CSCs and Unit Orderly rooms can assist you through the provision of advice, access to policy information and access to the relevant forms to support any decision to separate from the ADF.
ADF members and their families can obtain general information in relation to transition support services plus details for ADF Transition Centre's and ADF Transition Seminars from their Customer Service Centres located at each major base.
Advice from your respective career manager can be an important factor in your considerations as to whether or not you might choose to leave the Permanent Force. You should seek advice from your commander in the first instance regarding making contact with your career manager.
The Career Management Agencies (CMA) can provide advice regarding career service options, posting availability and career development.
Should you decide to separate, then the CMA is the executive decision maker regarding your application to separate or transfer to the Reserve Force.
Should you change your mind about separating, or wish to alter your separation date, the CMA must approve any changes.
You should make yourself familiar with your particular single Service requirements regarding separation from the permanent forces by contacting the relivant agency. Use the A-Z Contact List to view the organisations contact details.
Prior to your separation, you should ascertain if you are, or are likely to become eligible for any Honours and Awards. Typically if you have served on operational service or you may become eligible for the Australian Defence Medal, you should ensure that your personnel records are updated to ensure you receive your entitlement.
You should visit the Defence Honours and Awards website (www.defence.gov.au/medals) and if applicable commence any application process before you leave Defence.
You should factor in whether or not you plan to take leave in conjunction with your planned separation. ADF members are entitled to a range of leave and you should seek advice from your unit admin staff to ensure you understand all the leave elements that you may be entitled to.
Each Service has policy that governs access to leave, in particular the use of Long Service Leave (LSL), as part of the separation from Defence process. You should make yourself aware of any specific single Service requirements.
Leave that you do not utilise prior to separation will be calculated by your servicing administration Unit and will be paid to you as part of your final separation pay.
If you have previously worked for another Commonwealth or State agency you may be eligible to have your former service recognised for LSL accrual purposes. Similarly, if you intend taking employment with a Commonwealth or State agency your new employer may recognise your ADF service for LSL purposes.
If this applies to you, you should make arrangements to have any previous service recognised well before separation. Your unit can assist with having your previous service recognised, but it is important that this is done as early as possible.
