ComSuper administers both the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Scheme (DFRDB) and the Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS) on behalf of the DFRDB Authority and the Military Superannuation and Benefits Board, respectively.
Information on superannuation entitlements relating to resignation, age retirement, medical separation, redundancy, death and ancillary benefits are readily available from ComSuper.
Depending on your circumstances benefits may be either payable immediately as a lump sum or pension (or combination of both) upon separation from the ADF or preserved in the respective scheme.
You should make early contact with ComSuper as they can provide you with written estimates on what your superannuation, including pension benefits might be.
Further information is available from their websites at:
For MSBS members: www.militarysuper.gov.au
For DFRDB members: www.dfrdb.gov.au
If you have suffered an injury, disease or illness which you believe may be related to your service in the ADF, you may be entitled to compensation for the effects of that injury, disease or illness.
You can apply for recognition of your injury or illness at any time throughout your career as you could be entitled to compensation now or at some time in the future.
If you have not already done so, you are strongly encouraged to lodge a claim for compensation with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), even if your medical condition is not currently causing you any problems. This will assist if the condition does cause problems (e.g. arthritis) later in life.
If liability is accepted by the DVA for an injury, disease or illness, eligibility for various forms of compensation, rehabilitation and, in some cases, repatriation benefits will then be assessed.
Visit www.dva.gov.au for more information about the services offered by DVA
The Training and Information Program (TIP) provides training and information for Welfare and Pensions Officers who are volunteers working within Ex-service organisations (ESOs). TIP training is delivered to enable representatives to provide the best possible advice to veterans and former serving members. TIP representatives can provide assistance with claims for compensation and advice about DVA and other benefits and are independent of the Department.
You may wish to consult a trained person from your local area or from an organisation linked to your Service or Regiment. To find out more about the TIP program you can contact the following:
