warrendi personal locator beacon (PLB)

The Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) was designed to meet a demanding specification developed by the Royal Australian Air Force's Life Support Engineering Agency. It utilises civilian search and rescue infrastructure to provide the military with an extremely effective and reliable location capability for downed aircrew.

With a flexible design, the PLB is rugged enough to provide a modern defence force with an effective location device able to meet the demanding environmental rigours of tactical deployment.

Central to the capability of the PLB is its ability to alert on several frequencies simultaneously.

DescriptionPertinent information

The PLB utilises civilian search and rescue infrastructure to provide the military with an extremely effective and reliable location capability for downed aircrew.

The PLB's functional characteristics also ensure that maximum effectiveness is gained from employment of the COSPAS/SARSAT satellite system - a satellite constellation providing global detection of emergency signals and accurate positioning anywhere in the world. The PLB also offers alternative operating modes, using military distress frequencies and methods of operation, optimised for direction finding.

Specifically designed to meet demanding environmental requirements of temperature, vibration, shock and waterproofing, the PLB will operate under all conditions, even after many years in storage or being exposed to a hostile marine environment.
