30mm Gun Aimer PTT
30mm Gun Aimer PTT - instructor's scenario control

training - part-task trainers

For training that requires the development of physical skills, it is often essential to provide training aids that allow students to practice these skills. In cases where real equipment is not available, or where safety, cost or operational issues prevent its use, a Part Task Trainer (PTT) can provide a cost effective solution.

SMA produces custom-designed physical Part Task Trainers. Our designs are based on a detailed analysis of the training requirement, so that the physical and functional fidelity of the PTTs can be tailored to meet the training need while minimising cost.

A recent example produced for the Royal Australian Navy is the 30mm Gun Aimer PTT. This PTT allows gun aimers to practice firing drills and develop basic competency in aiming the gun and engaging both air and surface targets. The Aimer position in the PTT is physically identical to the real gun, providing high fidelity spatial awareness as well as accurate sensory feedback from operator control surfaces.

Other areas in which we have developed PTT solutions for training include: the development of visual discrimination skills (surveillance systems); OH&S (removal and replacement of bulky units); and the recognition of abnormal operating conditions (liquid cooling system).
