Laser Mallina - DSTO variant

simulation - SAM engagement scenarios (Ultra-Violet Mallina)

The UV Mallina was developed to provide a means to test UV Missile Warning Systems (MWS) at long range. The UV Mallina achieves this by emulating the UV signature of Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) rocket motors, including shoulder-fired SAMs or MANPADS. The UV Mallina can stimulate UV MWS at ranges of up to 5km, depending on atmospheric conditions and MWS sensitivity. By allowing the operator to control radiation parameters such as radiant intensity and emission time, the UV Mallina can be programmed to simulate specific SAM threats and engagement scenarios.

UV Mallina applications:

  • pilot and combat crew training
  • test and evaluation of EWSP equipment
  • development of tactics and doctrine
  • multiple threat scenarios using clusters or dispersed Mallinas

Benefits of the UV Mallina:

  • cost-effective: safe, repeatable means of testing MWS
  • proven performance: successfully tested against a number of MWS
  • flexibility: programmable to simulate a variety of threat scenarios
  • ruggedised: suitable for all operations including naval environments
  • ease of use: minimal user training and maintenance

The UV Mallina is capable of performing end-to-end testing of many MWS and has been successfully tested against the AAR-47, AAR-54, AAR-57, AAR-60 and MWS-200 systems.

A Laser Mallina variant has also been developed to enable long range testing of laser based missile threats including laser range finders, laser target designators and laser beam rider.

DescriptionPertinent information

The UV Mallina provides a safe, repeatable means to simulate SAM engagement scenarios to provide:

  • pilot and combat crew training
  • test and evaluation of EWSP equipment
  • development of tactics and doctrine
  • multiple threat scenarios

The UV Mallina achieves this by emulating the UV signature of SAM rocket motors. The operator can control radiation parameters such as radiant intensity and emission time to simulate specific SAM threats and engagement scenarios.

Tenix Defence Electronic Systems Division, in conjunction with our international partner ESL Defence, has developed the UV Mallina to emulate the UV signature of SAM rocket motors.

The UV Mallina was developed using technology from the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation and has been successfully tested against the AAR-47, AAR-54, AAR-57, AAR-60 and MWS-200 MWS.

Status

Company

The UV Mallina is used by defence research bodies, OEMs and armed forces throughout the world, including Australia, UK, USA, South Africa, Israel, Holland and Germany.

A Laser Mallina variant also exists for long-range testing of laser-based missile threats
