advanced SATCOM terrestrial infrastructure system (ASTIS) maritime communications element (MCE)
BAE Systems is Australia's most experienced provider of military SATCOM solutions. It has designed and developed the world's first simultaneous X and Ka-band terminal which is currently in-service with the Royal Australian Navy. The ASTIS MCE provides the infrastructure to give deployed Naval platforms the capability to transfer C2 information and to access broadcast information using high data rate Super High Frequency (SHF) SATCOM technology.
The ASTIS MCE terminal can access the X and Ka-band transponders on the Optus C1 satellite simultaneously and is also capable of operation with other satellites such as Skynet, Wideband Gap Filler (WGS) and the US Defence Satellite Communication Systems (DSCS). C or Ku-band operation can be provided as an option using feed and electronics interchange. A tri-band feed is a planned product improvement.

The terminal is based upon the proven Astrium Satellite Communications Onboard Terminal (SCOT) system. It uses state of the art technology, with the major components of the antenna now in their fourth generation. The ASTIS MCE terminal can be provided with a range of high power amplifier options. The standard configuration utilises a single 200 W X-band Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) and a 15 W Ka-band SSPA, which provides ample capacity for most battleships. Where higher Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) is required, the system can be provided with dual 200 W X-band SSPAs and a 120 W Ka-band Travelling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA). |
