acoustic intercept and ranging (AI&R) sonars

DescriptionPertinent information

The Sonartech Atlas AI&R Sonars are a family of well-proven submarine sonar processing systems providing the ability to intercept, process and display sonar transmissions and transient energy.

The AI&R Sonars will localise and characterise the signal source for immediate and effective recognition. Bearing, range, course and speed of the signal source are provided to the Command Team without the need for the submarine to manoeuvre.

The AI&R Sonars can use either the PRS Array, a dedicated array of distributed hydrophones, or both.

The AI&R Sonar performs automatic detection and localisation which allows the sonar operator to concentrate on other functions that he is responsible for, with the knowledge that AI&R Sonar will provide an alert when an active transmission is detected.

The Sonartech AI&R Sonars are currently installed as a specialist sonar system onboard the RAN Collins Class submarines.

One of the AI&R family of sonars, known as the Intercept Detection and Ranging Sonar (IDRS) has been fully integrated into the ISUS90 and CSU90 Submarine combat and sonar systems and is in use with multiple navies throughout the world including Israel, Greece, South Korea and Portuguese.
