Overview
The Executive develops military strategy and strategic policy to provide a framework for the development of future Defence capability, and to support military deployments, operations, and exercises.
Through our network of Defence attaches and liaison officers overseas, and by working with foreign Defence representatives in Australia, Strategy Executive supports Australia's relationships with our overseas defence partners and allies. Our Executive also manages the Defence Cooperation Program, which provides financial and military assistance to our neighbours and allies.
Strategy Executive also has stewardship of key issues on the Defence agenda, including: the development of concepts of network-centric warfare; expanding Australia's counter-proliferation efforts; and managing Australian participation in the US Missile Defence Program.
Activities
Strategy Executive plays an important role in informing Government policy and planning, and in supporting the development of Australian Defence Force (ADF) capability. Some of our core activities include:
- undertaking strategic analysis to continuously monitor and analyse the strategic environment and to draw out any implications for Australia's defence policy;
- developing international engagement strategies to manage Australia's international defence relationships with various countries and organisations;
- providing military strategic guidance for the deployment, employment and development of the ADF;and
- supporting Australia's counter-proliferation efforts and export control regime.
Civilian Positions
Strategy Executive advertises civilian positions regularly in the national press, drawing people from a wide array of disciplines including arts, law, economics, engineering, political science and the physical sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on written and oral communication skills, sound conceptual and analytical skills, and good judgement. Strategy Executive seeks to increase its intake of tertiary graduates through both the Defence Graduate Development Program and direct recruitment. Strategy Executive has also a number of past graduates who have progressed rapidly into management positions.
