SIEV 36

30 April 2010
Presentation of Commendations to RAAF Personnel

On the 16th of April, 2009, Suspected Irregular Entry Vessel (SIEV) 36, which had been apprehended by a Royal Australian Navy Patrol Boat to the north of Australia, was severely damaged by an explosion which caused a major fire.

On board SIEV 36 at the time were suspected asylum seekers and Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. Those ADF personnel from Navy, Army and Air Force helped rescue, treat and evacuate those injured. In recognition of their actions 51 Service men and women (42 Navy, 1 Army and 8 Air Force) have been awarded Australian Defence Force commendations.

Leading Aircraftman Adam Haynes and Leading Aircraftwoman Kate Weeks are two of the four RAAF Amberley-based airmen and women to be presented ADF Gold (Chief of Joint Operations) Commendations.
