Part 6: Education costs for children

15.6.1 Purpose

  1. The purpose of this Part is to assist with the additional costs for a dependant child attending school overseas, or staying behind in Australia if the member is posted overseas. This benefit is provided in one of the following forms.

    1. The reimbursement of additional costs to the member.

    2. An up-front payment of compulsory tuition fees to the child's school at the overseas posting.

    3. An up-front payment of compulsory tuition fees and accommodation costs to the child's school in Australia.

  2. A period may arise where members are eligible for education assistance both under this Part and under Chapter 8 Part 4 for performing duty within Australia, for the same child. For that period, the member only receives the benefits under Chapter 8 Part 4.

15.6.2 Member this Part applies to

A member is eligible for education assistance under this Part if they meet all these conditions.

  1. They are on a long-term overseas posting.

  2. They have a dependant child.

  3. The child is in full-time primary or secondary education.

    Exception: Education assistance is also provided for a child in pre-school at the member's posting location. The child must be at least three years old.

  4. The member is accompanied.

    Exception: The CDF may approve education assistance for unaccompanied members who have primary parental responsibility or care of a dependant.

Persons who can make the decision under paragraph 15.6.2.d, exception, on behalf of the Secretary/CDF:
A person not below WO2/APS 5 who is authorised to manage Defence personnel administration at the overseas post.
Senior ADF Representative at the overseas post
A person working in the Pay and Administration Centre – Victoria who is:

  • Overseas Administration Team Leader
  • Pay and Administration Manager Specialist
  • Civilian and Overseas Pay and Administration Centre Manager
  • Director Pay and Administration Centre
Director of Attaché and Overseas Management
