Public Holidays - Australia

When you're performing duty in Australia, you get time off for public holidays, unless you're required for duty.

Who can get public holidays in Australia?

You may get public holidays in Australia if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

Which public holidays can I get in Australia?

You may get the public holiday at the location where you're performing duty. This may not always be your posting location.

You usually take the same public holidays as Defence APS employees, unless you have to work. Public holidays may include national, state and local holidays.

If you're on recreation leave, you don't have to take leave for the public holiday.

You’ll get salary and allowances on public holidays.

If you’re on a flexible service determination, you get those public holidays that fall within your working days.

Can I substitute a public holiday?

You may apply to substitute a different day for a public holiday.

Your decision-maker should consider:

  • any Service requirements, and
  • if the substitute day is of cultural or religious significance.

What happens between Christmas and New Year?

You aren’t normally required to attend for duty between Christmas and New Year.

You get a mix of public holidays and short absence not required for duty for this period.

More information on public holidays in Australia can be found in Chapter 5 Part 12.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document.
