ADF Member's Guide

Carer's leave

You may get carer's leave to care for and support a dependant when they are sick or injured, or affected by an unexpected emergency.

Who can get carer's leave?

You may get carer's leave if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

When can I get carer's leave?

You may get carer's leave if you need to care for a:

  • sick or injured dependant
  • dependant when the usual carer is sick, or
  • dependant who is affected by an unexpected emergency.

A member with dependants (unaccompanied) may also get carer's leave.

How much carer's leave can I get?

You may get 10 working days of carer's leave in a year. Any day you are on duty counts towards the 10 days.

You may get additional carer's leave if you need it. This depends on whether you have other leave you can use or other care you can access.

You can take carer's leave for short periods at different times during the year. It doesn't accrue.

You can only get a maximum of two days for an unexpected emergency.

Do I need to provide evidence to get carer's leave?

If you take more than 3 days in a row, you have to provide a medical certificate or similar evidence.

Your supervisor may ask for evidence if you take less than 3 days in a row.

More information about carer's leave can be found in Chapter 5 Part 9 Division 3.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document. Therefore, if there is any conflict between the Member's Guide and Defence Determination 2016/19, Conditions of Service (and the Determinations made by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal), as compiled in PACMAN, PACMAN is the authority.
