ADF Member's Guide

Leaving the ADF

You should start preparing well before you intend to leave the ADF.

This process involves the whole family. Planning early will make your transition as smooth and successful as possible.

What should I do if I am planning to leave the ADF?

If you are planning to leave Defence, contact an ADF Transition Centre. There are ADF Transition Centres across Australia.

The ADF Transition Centre will give you practical guidance and information. This will help you transition into civilian life.

Transition Officers can connect you and your family to Defence and government support services. They can also help with any administration you may have to do.

The ADF Transition Handbook helps you and your family to prepare for separation from the ADF. The handbook has a checklist at the back to help you through the process.

Which benefits can I get?

You may get benefits 12 months before and up to 12 months after separation. Your length of qualifying service and mode of separation determine your benefits.

Some of the benefits you may get include:

The Defence Community Organisation also hosts ADF Transition Seminars around Australia. These seminars help you and your family prepare for your transition.

More information about leaving the ADF can be found in the ADF Pay and Conditions Manual, Chapter 2 Part 2.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document. Therefore, if there is any conflict between the Member's Guide and Defence Determination 2016/19, Conditions of Service (and the Determinations made by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal), as compiled in PACMAN, PACMAN is the authority.
