ADF Member's Guide

Trainee's dependant allowance

You may get trainee's dependant allowance if you are supporting a dependant while doing training. This could be recruit or officer training, or the undergraduate entry scheme.

Who can get trainee's dependant allowance?

You may get trainee's dependant allowance if you are a member of the Permanent Forces.

Trainee's dependant allowance tops up your salary and Service allowance.

Who can't get trainee's dependant allowance?

You can't get trainee's dependant allowance if:

  • your salary is more than that of a Private in Pay Grade 1
  • you don't get a trainee salary
  • you are on Reserve service, or
  • your eligible dependant has their own income above a specific amount.

If your spouse or partner is a member who is also eligible for the allowance, you will share the allowance.

More information about this allowance can be found in Chapter 4 Part 8 Division 1.

More information about the rates can be found in Chapter 3 Part 1 Schedule B.13.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document. Therefore, if there is any conflict between the Member's Guide and Defence Determination 2016/19, Conditions of Service (and the Determinations made by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal), as compiled in PACMAN, PACMAN is the authority.
