Army dental officer professional development scheme

You may get a refund if you take part in approved professional development activities. Defence may also pay the costs directly.

Who can get a refund for professional development activities?

You may get a refund for professional development activities if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service, or
  • Reserves on Reserve service

and you are

  • an Army dental officer providing clinical dental care, and
  • Army Individual Readiness Notice compliant on the day of professional development.

You don't have to be fit for operational deployment.

What can I get a refund for?

You may get a refund for professional development activities or equipment.

The refund depends on:

  • how the activity may improve your skills
  • If the activity could be funded by other means (for example, the Defence Assisted Study Scheme)
  • how much it costs, and
  • if it is of benefit to Defence.

You may get a refund for travel costs related to these activities, or you may use your Defence Travel Card for approved travel.

What can't I get a refund for?

You can't get a refund for some professional development activities. This includes:

  • activities which may be part of your specialist officer career structure, or
  • non-dental specific computer hardware, software or internet access.

You may get a refund for approved professional development activities up to $10,000 in a financial year. You may get a refund for travel costs related to these activities.

How do I get a refund for my professional development activities?

You must pay for your professional development activities up front. You can get a refund in the same financial year.

Defence may also pay the supplier directly.
