Division 3: Travel for removal purposes in Australia

9.2.8 Purpose

This Division sets out a member's eligibility for travel at Commonwealth expense for these purposes.

  1. To supervise packing or unpacking of their furniture and effects on removal.

  2. To accompany their dependants to a new location.

See: Chapter 6 Part 5, Removals and storage

9.2.9 Travel for first removal after entry into Service

A member may be eligible for travel at Commonwealth expense on their first removal after they enter the Service. To qualify, all these conditions must be met.

  1. They have completed initial recruit and employment training after enlistment, appointment or re-entry.

  2. They become eligible for the first removal after entry.

  3. They have been granted short absence for removal purposes.

See: Chapter 5 Part 11 Division 2, Short absence for removal purposes

9.2.10 Subsequent eligibility for removal travel

  1. Subject to subsection 2, the CDF may approve travel at Commonwealth expense for a member eligible for a removal who meets both these conditions.

    1. They have moved on posting before their dependants.

    2. They have been granted a short absence for removal purposes to go back to where their dependants are.

See: Chapter 5 Part 11 Division 2, Short absence for removal purposes

  2. The member must make the journey for one of these purposes.

    1. To supervise the packing of furniture or effects.

    2. To travel with their dependants to the new location. This must be because it would be unreasonable for the member's adult dependant to move the family by themselves.

Persons who can make the decision under subsection 9.2.10.1 on behalf of the CDF:
Supervisor not below WO2(E)/APS 4, in the member's direct chain of command or supervision.
Director/Commanding Officer not below MAJ(E)/APS 6 in the member's direct chain of command or supervision.
Commanding Officer (no rank limitation) – Navy

9.2.11 Dependants move before member's posting date

  1. Subject to subsection 2, the CDF may approve travel at Commonwealth expense for a member eligible for a removal who meets both these conditions.

    1. They have approval to move their dependants before the effective date of their posting.

    2. They have been granted a short absence for removal purposes.

See: Chapter 5 Part 11 Division 2, Short absence for removal purposes

  2. The member must make the journey for one of these purposes.

    1. To arrange accommodation and unpacking of furniture.

    2. To accompany their dependants on the journey to the new location. This must be because the health or age of their dependants means that it would be unreasonable to expect the member's adult dependant to move the family by themselves.

Persons who can make the decision under subsection 9.2.11.1 on behalf of the CDF:
Supervisor not below WO2(E)/APS 4, in the member's direct chain of command or supervision.
Director/Commanding Officer not below MAJ(E)/APS 6 in the member's direct chain of command or supervision.
Commanding Officer (no rank limitation) – Navy

9.2.12 Members without dependants – away from their posting location

  1. Subject to subsection 2, the CDF may approve travel at Commonwealth expense for a member without dependants who meets all these conditions.

    1. They are posted to another location while on attachment or temporary duty away from their posting location.

    2. They are eligible for a removal.

    3. They are granted a short absence for removal purposes.

See: Chapter 5 Part 11 Division 2, Short absence for removal purposes

  2. The journey must be to the member's old location to supervise the packing of their furniture or effects.

  3. The CDF must consider operational commitments before giving approval under subsection 1. If operational reasons delay leave and travel, the member may choose to appoint an agent to act on their behalf.

Persons who can make the decision under subsection 9.2.12.1 on behalf of the CDF:
Supervisor not below WO2(E)/APS 4, in the member's direct chain of command or supervision.
Director/Commanding Officer not below MAJ(E)/APS 6 in the member's direct chain of command or supervision.
Commanding Officer (no rank limitation) – Navy

Application to Reservists: Yes, on continuous full-time service.
