WHILE many Victorians have been feeling the cold this winter Mitcham resident, and former Whitefriars College student, Brad Costello spent his winter in the heat of Solomon Islands.
Brad, an Army Reserve platoon sergeant, has just returned from a four month deployment to Operation Anode, the ADF’s stabilisation mission based near Honiara.
He said as a platoon sergeant it was his job to administer a group of 30 diggers as well as maintain their morale.
“I also ensured they had what they needed to carry out their operational responsibilities,” he said.
“I learnt a lot about running a platoon on operations while I was up there.”
Brad, who joined the Army Reserve at the beginning of Year 12 in 1992, said it was an eye-opener to see the people and community within Solomon Islands.
“It was great to be able to assist where we could within the limits of our mission,” he said.
Brad is enjoying a three week break with his wife Adele and three sons, Ben, Riley and Harry, before returning to work at SAI Global where he is a food safety and quality assurance systems trainer.
