Matthew Collins - Inverell

33 year old Inverell High school Graduate, Matthew Collins is living by the schools motto "Strive to achieve"”

Matthew, a keen Rugby league player, always did his best whether it was on the playing field or at work.

In 2003 he made a life changing decision to leave town and join the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

He said he always wanted to join the Army.

"I don't know why I wanted to join, however it’s the best decision I have ever made," Matt said.

Sergeant (SGT) Matthew Collins, a member of the Royal Australian Army Ordinance Corps, is currently deployed to the Middle East region (MER) as a Warehouse Supervisor with Force Support Element five (FSE 5).

"This is my third deployment to the MER and I am proud to be here serving our nation," SGT Collins said.

Some of his tasks include the management and distribution of supplies and equipment necessary for the conduct of operations.

He said his role was vital in the day to day operations of the ADF's contribution in the MER.

"If I didn't do my job properly then it would have a drastic effect to the operation," SGT Collins said.

"Everything in the MER would not be able to function effectively."

SGT Collins said he recommended a career in the ADF to anyone wanting a challenge in life.

"The ADF offers great employment opportunities for everyone," SGT Collins said.

"It's a great way for young school leavers to develop life skills, have a worthwhile career and travel."

SGT Collins is posted to the 9th Force Support Battalion, at RAAF Base Amberley, QLD.

On returning to Australia SGT Collins will attend his step daughter Chandelle's graduation parade as she too has joined the Army, following in the family footsteps.

Currently there are more than 1700 ADF members deployed to the Middle East region. The ADF remains actively involved in advising, assisting and training Iraqi Security Forces in Iraq; training and advising the Afghan National Defence Security Forces in Afghanistan; and maritime security duties throughout the Middle East region.
