Shaun Gill - ADFA welcomes Kalgoorlie local

Hannans local, Shaun Gill is one of ten high school graduates from across WA who were recently farewelled by family and friends to commence training as an officer in the Australian Defence Force. Brigadier Stephen Coggin, Officer Commanding 13 Brigade and Senior ADF Officer in WA presided over the ceremony.

Shaun was appointed as an officer cadet (General Service Officer Pilot) in the Australian Army and will study at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra. The appointment ceremony took place at Irwin Barracks, Karrakatta; before Shaun travelled to Canberra to commence his first year of military training and university studies.

“I can’t wait to take on the challenge” said Shaun. “I know I am going to be fine but it is still a big step for me”.

Director General of Defence Force Recruiting, Brigadier Scott Hicks, said the appointment ceremonies occurring all around Australia were the culmination of a highly competitive selection process.

“I offer my congratulations to all of the Appointees for showing the potential to be future leaders in the Australian Defence Force and also meeting the University of New South Wales Canberra campus (UNSW Canberra) tertiary admission requirements,” Brigadier Hicks said.

As an officer cadet, Shaun will undertake a three year military and academic program while studying for an undergraduate degree from his choice of Arts, Business, Engineering, Information Technology, Science or Technology through UNSW Canberra at ADFA.

“In a few years these young Australians will be working in a variety of exciting and challenging fields as the future leaders of our Navy, Army and Air Force,” Brigadier Hicks said.
