Tim Rymill - Tim's Tour of Duty

Duncraig’s Lance Corporal Tim Rymill, 22, will soon be saying goodbye to his parents Wendy and Graeme, and they won’t see him again until early next year.

Tim used to play lacrosse for Wanneroo, but now he’s in an even bigger team game.

Soon Tim will be one of 1550 Australian soldiers in Afghanistan who will be helping to train Afghan soldiers and to restore peace to the troubled province.

“I’ve thought about joining the Army since I was five,” said Tim. “I liked the mateship and the adventure so I joined straight from Duncraig High School, aged 17.

“I’ve been to East Timor twice, but Afghanistan is the big one. We’ve been training hard, using simulated bases and outposts – it’s been pretty realistic with simulated rocket attacks and roadside bombs.

“In Afghanistan my job will be signaler for B Company HQ – keeping good communications with the platoons and back to HQ.

“After four months we all get some leave and I’m planning to head to Europe, travel around and catch up with family in Dorset [south west England].

“I know my Mum is anxious but they are both proud to see me do it.

“When I’m finally back I’m planning to invest in property but not before that first beer in Northbridge and the first swim at Hillary’s Beach.”
