Luke Crichton - Rockingham Diggers Keep Wheels Turning

Rockingham’s Army Craftsman Luke Crichton, 22, inspects the undercarriage of an Army Landrover while another local soldier, Warrant Officer Peter Skinner, 32, checks on progress.

The two Diggers are now in the hot, sticky and impoverished streets of Dili, Timor-Leste (East Timor) — a world away from the refreshing breezes of home.

Digger like Peter and Luke are not often in the limelight, but they are every bit as critical to the success of operations as the front line infantry. The Army’s extensive workshops in Dili maintain a large vehicle fleet —everything from Landovers to Mack trucks.

Specialist Armourers also maintain the Diggers’ weapons, keeping them safe and serviceable.

Peter, Luke and a thousand other Diggers are currently serving in Timor-Leste. Their mission is to assist the Timor-Leste Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese people, so they can resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.
