Michal Moczulski - WORTH THE EFFORT IN TIMOR

It’s a long way from Perth’s Trinity College and Bayswater to the sweltering tropical heat of Timor-Leste, but for Michal Moczulski the journey’s been more than worthwhile.

Michal, 26, is one of around 750 Australian Defence Force personnel serving on Operation Astute, the Australian Government’s effort to help restore peace in our northern neighbour.

Normally based in Townsville with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) Michal is a Corporal currently deployed with Timor-Leste Battle Group 3 and the International Stabilisation Force in Dili.

One month into his first deployment and with a couple of months to go, Michal was originally a geomatic engineer with the Army’s 1st Topographical Survey Squadron in Brisbane.

He’s excited to be finally putting into practise years of training.

“Every moment of every day I’m absolutely stoked to be here,” Michal said.

Michal is attached to the Battle Group’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) organisation for the duration of his deployment.

“We work closely with the UN mission and the civilian authorities here to make sure that aid gets to those who most need it.”

“Everywhere I see signs of reconstruction and development. We’re definitely having a positive impact.”

Michal is looking forward to taking up a new posting as 2RAR’s Physical Training Instructor on his return.

Operation Astute is part of the Australian Government's response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in bringing stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.
