ABMT Luke Hewitt, Scarborough WA - Join the Navy, see the world says local boy

The Persian Gulf is a long way from Perth 's sandy beaches but for Scarborough local Luke Hewitt being on extended deployment is all part of the job.

Luke, an engineering sailor on HMAS Anzac, said the Navy has taken him to places he probably wouldn't have seen if he hadn't joined up.

"I have travelled from Noumea to Pearl Harbour , Indonesia to New Zealand and Heard Island in the Antarctic," he said.

"I love my job for the travel and the opportunity it gives me to interact with all sorts of people."

As an engineering sailor, Luke is primarily involved with keeping the ship's numerous technical plants up and running.

He is also responsible for various onboard damage control systems and forms an integral part of the ship's first defence against mishaps.

"I am responsible to the Captain for all damage control condition statements which is our frontline defence in fighting fires, floods and other accidents that might occur," he said.

But for Luke, who joined the Navy in 1999, a healthy balance between work and social life is an important part of keeping things in perspective.

"I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend and family which is very important to me," he said.

"When I get back from the Gulf I'm hoping to take my partner on a special holiday to make up for the time I've been away."

HMAS Anzac will be away from Australia for about six months before returning to its home port at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia.
