Duncan O’Brien - Duncan Closes The Gap For A Career At Sea
Robinvale’s Duncan O’Brien, joined the Navy to see the world. Now early in his career, Duncan is about to set sail onboard HMAS Parramatta to South East Asia.
Duncan joined the Navy under Defence’s Gap Year Program which enabled him to see what Navy had to offer before making his decision to become an Electronics Technician sailor.
“I knew I wanted to join the Navy, I just didn’t know what job I wanted to do.
The Gap Year Program allowed me to experience different areas within Navy, helping me select my chosen career path,” said Seaman O’Brien.
As an Electronics Technician, Duncan has varied responsibilities including repairing and operating a variety of electronic systems associated with guns, missiles, radar, sonar, navigation, combat data, communications, electrical and mechanical systems.
“I have a task book to complete during my time at sea, working with all the electronics departments,” said Seaman O’Brien.
This will not be Duncan’s first time at sea. He was able to experience life at sea during his Gap Year, but this is his first time overseas.
“I am really keen to experience the different cultures in foreign ports with my ship mates,” said Seaman O’Brien.
HMAS Parramatta will be away from her home port until May. Duncan is hoping he will see his proud parents Peter O’Brien and Patricia O’Brien on the wharf when he sails home.
