Brett Knight - Daylesford

Daylesford local Brett Knight joined the Navy aged 17, straight out of High School. Now he’s 20 and on pirate patrol off the Horn of Africa.

Brett and his 180 shipmates aboard HMAS Parramatta are currently on a six month deployment to the Middle-East as part of Australia’s contribution to international campaigns against terrorism and piracy.

“If everything goes to plan, before the end of the year I will have completed my training and will hold a Certificate III in electronics and communication.

“In the three years I feel I have matured dramatically and this has helped with not only work but life as well — especially managing my time and money!”

It was the opportunity to travel that got Brett interested in the Navy — he believes it’s quite ironic that he now gets paid to see the world.

“There are always chances to travel, and to experience and learn about other cultures, but I also have the chance to excel with new opportunities in life,” said Brett.

“At times work and personal life can clash, but generally on a ship everyone is really close, so we are all willing to help each other out when it’s needed. It brings out the best in people,” said Brett.

Brett has now set his goal in obtaining his Certificate IV in Electronics and Communications and becoming qualified in radar systems.

But before then, when his deployment finishes next month, he’ll be home for a big catch-up with family and friends.
