23 year old Officer Cadet Corrine Seabrook from Ballarat has swapped her normal job as an administrative assistant at Ballarat base Hospital to compete in the high profile Australian Army Skill at Arms Meeting (AASAM) being conducted at Victoria’s Puckapunyal military base over a 10 day period.
As an Army Reservist, Corrine is a member of the 4 Brigade (Victoria’s Brigade) team, who went to Melton Secondary College and then Melbourne University where she majored in Psychology. She has been going through a steep learning curve. “ I am going well so far and enjoying it immensely. The most challenging part to date has been learning to operate wearing body armour, which weighs a lot and is something new to me.”
When she finished her degree, she wanted an exciting career and joined the Army Reserve to challenge herself. “It has certainly done that, she said, I have been training to be an officer, and will apply to become a Military Policewomen. I keep in good shape and always listen to the advice from my superiors. This has stood me in good stead so far.”
“AASAM has been an excellent experience for me. All of the international teams have been eager to teach us Australians their customs and culture and learn about the Australia lifestyle.”
Officer Cadet Seabrook is a keen motor bike rider and is going to go trail riding in the Wombat State Forest on returning to civilian life in Ballarat.
AASAM is a significant regional engagement shooting competition which attracts numerous overseas teams. This year 12 international teams are competing in addition to a number of Australia Army teams and the contest is extremely close.AASAM is an important training activity for the Army to validate its marksmanship standards and the personal weapons used on the battlefield. It is also an excellent opportunity for Army to conduct a very cost efficient international military exercise, where the common language is marksmanship and closer relationships are formed between soldiers from countries within our region.
