Nicholas and Matthew Graney - Hobart Navy Brothers reunited at Christmas Island

HOBART Naval officers Nicholas and Matthew Graney have been reunited more than 3,000 nautical miles from their home in the far-flung Australian waters off Christmas Island.

Lieutenant Nicholas Graney and his younger brother Sub Lieutenant Matthew Graney caught up in December while their respective ships HMAS Pirie and HMAS Sydney were deployed in support of Operation RESOLUTE, the military contribution to Australia’s whole of government border security effort.

The two brothers joined the Royal Australian Navy six years apart with Nick, who is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, conducting his Officer of the Watch training in frigates HMAS Anzac and HMAS Perth

Nick is now the Executive Officer (2IC) of patrol boat crew Attack Six, an Armidale Class Patrol Boat, and has diversified to incorporate the duties of Boarding Officer and has responsibility for investigating vessels entering Australian waters to counter a range of threats including:  terrorism, illegal foreign fishing, pollution, piracy, prohibited imports and exports and people smuggling.

Matthew joined the Navy in 2010 and joined the crew of Guided Missile Frigate HMAS Sydney while alongside at Christmas Island to commence Phase Four of his Junior Warfare Officers Application Course.

Nick was overjoyed by the occasion and said seeing his younger brother following in his footsteps made the job all the more worthwhile.

“I really love what I do, and I hope that Matt gets as much out of his career as I have so far” Nick said.
