After attending Parklands High School and Hellyer College, where she played for the South Burnie Hockey Club, Kelly decided to join the Navy because it offered a challenging working environment and the potential for travel. She was right both times.
“I was raised by my brother Wayne and sister-in-law Carol Edmunds from age 8, and through them, I learnt a lot about standing on my own two feet and not being afraid of life’s challenges,” Kelly said.
Kelly began in the Navy as a Combat Systems Operator, where she was dux of her class, quickly promoted and awarded a prestigious Commanding Officers’ Commendation while posted to HMAS Stuart.
Kelly then decided to become a Supply Officer and completed the New Officer Entry Course in mid-2005 before undertaking a further two years study for the Supply Officer Application Course.
During this period, Kelly’s talents were once again recognised when she received awards for Junior Officer Leadership, and academic excellence on the Supply Officer Course.
Now a Lieutenant, Kelly is the Deputy Supply Manager for HMAS Toowoomba, deployed to the Middle East as part of Operation SLIPPER, Australia’s contribution to international campaigns against terrorism and piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
“The best part is definitely the people you meet, the friendships you make, the places you see and the unforgettable experiences you have along the way.
“I also love the fact that we are out here doing a job the assists individuals, groups and countries on a daily basis,” she said.
“Nothing makes me prouder than marching on ANZAC Day beside my mates.”
After her six month deployment ends, Kelly is most looking forward to spending time with family and friends at Christmas.
