Melissa Neilson - LauncestonLaunceston’s Melissa Neilson will soon be returning home from the Sudan after a critical moment in that nation's history. She has been part of Operation Azure, the Australian Defence Force's contribution to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS).
“There was a lot of uncertainty whether the vote would take place on time, and whether it could be conducted peacefully,” said Melissa. “It was an interesting time!”
The referendum, conducted in January, was generally peaceful, and showed an overwhelming number of southern voters in favour of separation.
Before Sudan, Melissa had previously deployed on operations to East Timor in 1999, and flew directly back to Launceston for her wedding at St Andrews Church.
“The Air Force has allowed me to travel extensively, both within Australia and overseas,” said Melissa. “Professionally, it has also given me the opportunity to do a wide variety of jobs”
Melissa joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1994 after completing school at Ravenswood High School and Alanvale College.
Melissa began as a clerk and after several promotions she currently holds the rank of Squadron Leader.
During her 17 year career, Melissa has worked at RAAF Bases across Australia, as well as an overseas posting in Penang, Malaysia.
“I enjoy helping and supporting people. That has definitely been the case in Sudan”.
“In the Sudan I provide administrative, personnel and logistical support to our deployed personnel, in areas such as finance, postal services and accommodation.
“Especially for our people in remote areas, providing links back to Australia, especially mail, is a huge morale booster. It helps them to focus on their UN mission,” says Melissa.
“Building strong relationships with local business people and adapting to the challenges of a different culture and environment were also highlights of the deployment.”
Upon her return to Australia and husband Dave, Melissa is also looking forward to returning to Launceston in the near future.
“Although my career has taken me elsewhere, I always try to get back to Launceston as often as I can to visit family and friends” said Melissa.
“My parents and family are very keen for me to spend Christmas in Launceston with them because I have been overseas for the past three!”
