Bradley Jessup - Launceston sailor on historic last voyage

Launceston’s Bradley Jessup, 20, has just returned from a historic overseas Navy deployment. He was aboard HMAS ADELAIDE on the frigate’s last overseas deployment before she is retired from the Navy.

“My parents still live in Launceston but, after I graduated Year 10 at Riverside High School, I did a TAFE course in Mechanical Engineering, got my Certificates II and III, and joined the Navy at 17 in 2005.

“It was a bit like the advertisements — I was interested in the travel, diversity and opportunities that Defence promotes! I live each day as it comes but I still think that one day I will be able to look back on my life and honestly say that I have been there and accomplished that.”

“Aboard ADELAIDE I’m responsible for the maintenance of the ships inflatable boats and the diesel generators. I carry out planned maintenance, pre-sailing checks and small repairs.

“As an Able Seaman I also have the responsibility to look after the newer Seaman ranks and lead the way.

“As a marine technician you get a lot of recognition for keeping the ship s functional, which gives you a bit of a buzz. So we are a pretty tight group with lots of humour to keep us motivated.  It’s a good sense of community as we will always step out ashore together as a group and we have the attitude of ‘one in - all in!’

“It’s about the people you work with, you make great mates even if they move away, we will always find a way to catch up for a beer. I love that you are always learning new things everyday. The knowledge and skills I’m acquiring will make me much better off for the future.”
