Our People in TAS
Jamie Levin - Flinders Island, TASJamie joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 2000. Now promoted to Corporal, Jamie is an Air Force fire fighter.
CPL Levin is part of a task group of 170 ADF aircrew and support staff operating two AP-3C Orion aircraft on patrol over Iraq and the Persian Gulf to support the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq and the international coalition operation against terrorism.
As a fire fighter, Jamie provides airfield and structural fire fighting expertise, ensuring that Australia 's people, aircraft and buildings are safe on operations.
"This is my first deployment overseas. I have really enjoyed working with ADF members and other coalition forces. We help train the local fire fighters so it's great to pass on our skills. They are appreciative of our contributions and it's a great feeling to help them out."
Jamie is currently posted to RAAF Williamtown, near Newcastle in New South Wales , but misses the outdoor activities, easy going pace and the friendly community on Flinders Island.
"I particularly miss the Pub in Lady Barron - it's got the best view in the world. The support from my family has been great. I am carrying an Australian flag from the Flinders Island RSL with me on my tour and I will present it on my return."
"I have been in the Middle-East for five months now and I am looking forward to spending time with my wife and two sons when I return," he said. "I can't wait to teach my oldest son to surf."
Jamie and the members of the AP-3C Orion task group are a key component of operation CATALYST which is Australia 's contribution to the multinational force efforts to develop a secure and stable environment in Iraq and to assist with national recovery programs. Operation CATALYST comprises approximately 1575 personnel. The task group also supports operation SLIPPER, Australia 's contribution to the international effort against terrorism.
Jamie and his colleagues from the current detachment are scheduled to return to Australia in June.
