Stewart Whiteside - Aberfoyle Park

Aberfoyle Park’s Stewart Whiteside is following a boyhood dream, and he’s seeing the world in his RAAF uniform.

“I’ve had excellent experiences, from operations in Australia to being deployed in Afghanistan,” said Stewart.

Now a Flight Lieutenant, the Scotch College graduate has been 10 years in the RAAF. He is currently operations officer with 1st Air Field Defence Squadron, based at Amberley in Queensland.

The Squadron’s main role is defending people and aircraft from ground-based threats at home and overseas — in effect it’s part of the RAAF’s own army.

Stewart’s unit deployed on Operation Queensland Flood Assist last year and recently flew to WA to complete more operational training.

“We’re here to help defend Australia, and also assist in disaster relief where necessary,” he said.

“It’s been a fabulous journey through so many different scenarios.”
