Sheridan Bonney - SEATON SOLDIER PLAYS A PART IN TIMOR PEACE

Local Seaton soldier Sheridan Bonney has spent just one month in the sweltering tropical heat of Timor Leste, and she’s still got five more to go. She’s part of the Australian response to help in restore peace to that country.

The former student of The Parks High School is now a Corporal in the Army where she has specialised as a military policewoman. Now she is working in the military police section as part of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in Dili.

Sheridan joined the Army in 1995, and this is her first tour of duty to Timor Leste.

“My role is to provide specialist Military Police support to the ISF and the government of Timor Leste. We are also here to help provide a stable environment for the people of Timor Leste.

“My previous years in the Army were as a Dental Supervisor, so this Military Police work is quite different. I had only just completed the basic Military Police course in June this year — so I’m learning as much as I can.

“Serving in an operational environment is also a great challenge and can be very rewarding,” Sheridan said.

Having joined the Army for travel and new experiences, Sheridan has certainly got what she bargained for. Every day provides a memorable moment, especially when the local children’s faces light up after they receive a gift or small trinket.

“When you go to an orphanage and hand out small koalas, the looks of delight can be quite overwhelming,” Sheridan said.

Sheridan’s deployment also continues a long tradition of military service throughout her family. “My great-grandfather served in the Royal Navy, my grandfather in New Guinea, my sister in the RAN, and both of my brothers are currently serving in the Australian Defence Forces.

“I am very proud to continue that service!” Sheridan said.

When Sheridan returns home she is looking forward to spending time with her family and relaxing on the beach.

Sheridan is one of about 850 Australian Defence Force personnel currently serving in Timor Leste as part of Operation Astute, the Australian Government response to the Timorese Government request for assistance in restoring peace to their country.

The Australians, as part of the International Stabilisation Force, are assisting the Government of Timor Leste and the United Nations Police to provide a secure environment for all East Timorese.
