Cavin Wilson - Townsville man wins scholarship to Oxford

HARVARD, Oxford, Yale and Cambridge are centres of learning that conjure up thoughts of excellence and achievement available to only a selected few.

Flight Lieutenant (FLTLT) Cavin Wilson of Townsville is among those selected few after being awarded a John Monash Scholarship to go to Oxford University to complete studies in his chosen field.

FLTLT Wilson, a graduate of Townsville Grammar School, will be at Oxford University in England for two years studying for a Master of Philosophy in Economics, focusing on public economics.

“I am genuinely humbled by the opportunity to realise a childhood dream and study at Oxford,” FLTLT Wilson said.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and it will be a true honour to represent the Monash Foundation in the UK. My dad couldn’t be more proud.”

FLTLT Wilson attended the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra and is the co-founder of ‘Soldier On’, a charity supporting veterans wounded on operations, raising funds and instituting programs.

“The General Sir John Monash Foundation requires scholars to have an active involvement in their communities. I think Australians really appreciate the work Soldier On is doing for wounded veterans,” FLTLT Wilson said.

FLTLT Wilson was deployed to the Middle East in 2010 as Officer in Charge, Joint Movements Control Office Gulf States and Afghanistan.

With his academic, military and charity backgrounds, FLTLT Wilson had an impressive CV to present to the panel that awarded the scholarships.

Although he will be absent from Air Force for those years at Oxford, FLTLT Wilson agrees his chain of command has been supportive of the opportunity to study at the prestigious institution.

“The team at HQJOC are incredibly supportive,” FLTLT Wilson said.

“Everyone is really happy for me. They are doing whatever they can to make the process as smooth as possible. I am working with Air Force to arrange posting details and I am confident that everything will work out,” he said.
